The former Lyric Theatre was built in 1912 as the Comus Theatre and was exclusively the home of vaudeville. Later, as part of the Saenger circuit, it was a movie and vaudeville house as the Strand Theatre. It was renamed the Lyric Theatre when it became part of the Malco chain of movie houses in the 1930's.

Renovations to the theatre at that time included a new marquee and an Art Deco style redesign for the interior. The Lyric Theatre continued on with stage shows in addition to its film screenings.

The Lyric Theatre remained a popular movie house until 1984 when it was abandoned and nearly demolished. The Tupelo Community Theatre came along, purchased the old Lyric Theatre, and it has remained open ever since. Live stage productions are now the focal point of the theatre.

Built in 1912 it opened as the Comus Theatre. When the silent and then talkies came into the picture the theatre was acquired by the Saenger Thetres and was renamed the Strand. It must have later became part of the Malco Theatres and was renamed the Lyric. The actual street address for the Tupelo Community Arts Theatre is 200 North Broadway, Tupelo, Mi. 38804.

A 1986 view of the Lyric Theater in Tupelo and a larger view here. Give Tupelo credit for saving the building, but they certainly did not do it justice with the ugly paint job.

On this 75th Anniversary of Elvis's birth I wonder if he actually ever attended this theatre as a boy or performed on its stage. Anyone know?
