As of 2006 the Granada building was still standing, but had become a shell of its former self. The light colored building had a tall tower on one end with "Granada" spelled out vertically on a red background trimmed in green. A very ornate marquee sheltered the entrance and ticket booth. "Granada" topped the marquee in script on both sides with the front of the marquee accentuated in some very elegant and ornate artwork. The Capitan in Pasadena is a virtual twin to the Granada with different colors. It has fared much better, but is also in danger of being lost.

on a recent visit to Houston, peered in through the glass doors. saw some spanish religious signage, which leads me to believe that this place may have been some sort of mexican church for a bit before it was locked up. the porch area smelled of must and urine. very sad. i wish i could get in there for 15 minutes...

The Granada Theater opened at 11:45 a.m. on December 7, 1949. The premier feature was “You’re My Everything” with Dan Dailey and Anne Baxter. Opening day ads for the theater exhorted you to “Give yourself a treat! You’ve never seen anything like Houston’s new, modern, magnificent Granada.” The correct address is 9231 Jensen Drive, Houston, 77093.
