Opened in 1948, the historic Beverly Drive-In ran successfully for decades. But in 1987, the theater's owner passed away suddenly and the theater was forced to close.

Thanks to the efforts of Jim Norton and Barbara Suick, who own seven drive-in theaters in Florida and Wisconsin, the Beverly reopened on May 15 2001, years after its last season came to an end. Norton and Suick's N&S Theater Drive-Ins is one of the largest drive-in chains in the country, and their eight theaters are among the roughly 600 left in the United States. The two are leasing the Beverly from the daughter of the original owner.

The Beverly is being reopened as a first-run twin theater and now contains 500 parking spaces with two large screens, one measuring 100 x 75 feet and another measuring 80 x 40 feet.

This drive-in was damaged by Hurricane Katrina and is closed. I don't know if or when it is going to reopen:

"The end of the road for the venerable Beverly Drive Inn in Hattiesburg. Theres not enough insurance coverage to come in and fix everything. At this point and time, I personally will not reopen the drive-in. Screen number 2 is gone and damage to screen number one.
See this would be a perfect example of some of the fraud occuring with the red cross that money could be going to a historic landmark in Hattiesburg".

Opened on May 29, 1948. Its feature presentation was "Swell Guy," with Sonny Tufts and Ann Blyth. And as Chuck already mentioned in 2006, the address is:

A group has formed on Facebook to try to do something about the Beverly. You can read about it at http://misspreservation.com/2009/02/12/friends-of-the-beverly-on-facebook/

The Beverly Drive In Theare in Hattiesburg, Ms is still for sale. The last I heard they were asking one and a half million for the property. The back screen is still down, but they seem to be keeping the grass cut. Hope someone or a group will purchase and persevere the Beverly for future generations of movie goers.

theatreman1, As far I as know, the Beverly is still for sale. I read that another group was looking at it in May, but I do not know the outcome. In Sept of 2008 the Beverly was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in Mississippi. So any rehab work could possibly qualify for tax credits. I understand there has been some moisture damage in the booth and concession areas. The asking price was $1,069,000 for the Beverly and its 12.27 acres of property. Below is the realtor listing link. http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/5320-Hwy-49-South_Hattiesburg_MS_39401_1105906881
I sure hope that someone or group will get together and save this old Drive-In before its too late.

What is the best way to contact the current owner of the Beverly Drive-In?
posted by ADJ119 on Nov 5, 2009 at 8:30am
ADJ119, the last time I was in the area, the Beverly looked the same, looks like no repairs of any kind have been performed since Katrina in 2005. I have been told there is moisture damage in the concession and booth building. Screen two is down. The Beverly was listed in 2008 on the National Register of Historical places in Mississippi. This means it should be eligible for tax credits for the remodeling and rehab of the drive-in to get it operating again. The link below is for the National Register Registration of the Beverly. It should give you a lot of information you need.

ADJ119, If you do not find the contact information you need in the Beverly's Historical Registration, I will be glad to furnish you the owners contact information.

Back in 1956 it parked 200 cars and was owned by H.Hargroder.
posted by MikeRogers on Dec 5, 2009 at 11:08am
The Beverly, the second Drive In Theatre opened in the state of Mississippi, is still owned by the family of Herb and Sue Hargroder. It had been leased to another operator, who ran it up to its closing due to damage by hurricaine Katrina in 2005.
