In 1978, after two years of studying with Alvina Krause, the legendary teacher of theatre, a group of young artists decided to put down roots in the town of Bloomsburg and start a theatre. Thus began the nonprofit Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble which in 1980 purchased the Columbia movie theatre in downtown Bloomsburg. The theatre maintains most of its original and unusual marquee.

I saw this theatre in 1998 and the marquee is quite impressive. The floor has been leveled and seating capacity greatly reduced. The present seating is now stadium style.

The marquee was more impressive when the much larger 'Columbia' was still part of the marquee.
