Located in Kinmount, Ontario, just a scenic 100-mile drive north of Toronto, is a theater that you will be likely to never forget. The screens and museum that make up Highlands Cinemas are all built around the owner's home!

Screens vary in size from 80 seats in size up to 275 seats. Each theater is decorated in a different style and each must be seen to really appreciate the place and all the effort that went into making them. All theaters are equipped with first rate stereo sound. Several of the theaters even feature stadium seating!

Consuming all the available lobby space, and some theater space, is a fantastic projector and film equipment collection the likes of which are only seen at places like the Smithsonian. The poster and Lobby Card collection add significantly to the overall effect of the museum and will provide you with countless hours of entertainment.

Interestingly, Highlands operates seasonally. The theater starts up in late Spring and closes in mid-October, so if you're planning a visit, call ahead to see what's playing and to make sure that the museum is open. New equipment or posters are always being added to the displays and there are always a number of surprises at hand.

As the theater's owner says, In Kinmount, you remember not only the movie but the movie theater!

I've been there. It is probably one of the most rewarding visits I've ever made to a museum. Keith loves cinema and film. I've traveled around the world and have never found anything like it. The lobby displays are very unusual, not just projection machinery but astonishing poster and lobby card displays, and other memorabilia. The theaters are remnants of theaters long gone, beautiful arc deco, neuveau styles that decorated the now deceased great movie palaces across Canada and the United States. Do yourself a grand favor. Go early, see a film, and stay late. The community is very small, very quaint. You'll find yourself spending hours in the theaters and lobby.
