Sunset 5 Theatres

I live in walking distance from the Sunset 5 so it is a frequent visting place for me. Not very spectacular but still a great place to see quiet intimate Art films. But I after stopping at the Virgin Megastore and Guacho Grill for dinner it gets quite expensive. Still one of my favorite theatres in L.A.

The current auditorium seating capacities are 190, 190, 198, 250, 290.

Friday night I was at the Virgin Megastore; it is closing at the end of the month because the owners of the complex will not renew thier lease. They did want to stay and even offered to downgrade to one floor. The renovation construction has ceased. There was going to be a new Trader Joe's where the Guitar Store was, now that is not going to happen. It appears that the whole complex may be torn down. Gone will be whatever is remaining there including the Laemmle SUNSET 5 theatres. I'm not sure how accurate this info is and if it is true how quickly it will happed. But another high profile theatre in L.A. looks to be biting the dust.

I've had a feeling the Sunset 5 may not be long for this world, especially considering how Laemmle has mostly been losing out on top bookings since the Arclight opened.

Didn't the huge Virgin store at this location already close?

The name on the website is Laemmle's Sunset 5.

The Virgin Megatore is closed, but the revovations on the 8000 Sunset project are still underway. The Trader Joes IS going in. There is new cushy seating everywhere in the complex along with lots of new trees & plants. They are also installing a roof over the plaza escalator, presumeably so that it can be operated in inclement weather.

The LA Times talked about the renovation of the Sunset mall today. Trader Joes where the Virgin store was and new Crate and Barrel store.
