The Albany Theatre opened as "Southwest Georgia's Magnificent Theatre" on September 12, 1927. Dedicated to "the pleasure loving public of South Georgia", the Albany Theatre's premiere program featured H. L. Tallman at the console of the three-manual Robert Morton pipe organ (Opus 2304), Ralph Barnes and his Albany Theatre Orchestra and, on the screen, Ronald Coleman and Vilma Banky in "The Magic Flame". The first director of this Adam-inspired theatre was Homer W. McCallon.

The theatre made a successful adaptation to sound films and remained Albany's first-run theatre a few years prior to its closing in the 1970's.

The theatre was purchased from the Farkas Estate by Oglethorpe Development Group, a minority enterprise which is currently underwriting a restoration of the theatre as a performing arts center.

In 1940, the Albany Theatre presented the world premiere of Paramount's "The Biscuit Eater," a boy-and-his-dog story partially filmed on location in rural Georgia: http://images.google.com/hosted/life/f?q=premiere+source:life&imgurl=2f876ee256c525f3

A forlorn view of the closed Albany Theater in Albany from 1986. (Notice the great bas relief artwork).

If there is only one vehicle within a mile of an old theater.....guess where it will be parked?

The Albany Theatre is up for sale for 1.5 million. There are some pictures of the renovations that have been done on www.albanyc1.com
I toured this theatre several years ago before restoration begin and I do not recognzie some of the areas shown in the pictures. It is possible that they may be dividing up some of the large areas. I don't know what has happended unless the owner just ran out of funds.
