The cinema was leased out to a discotheque few years ago and was partially destroyed by fire. It was demolished last year and now a parking ground.

i last watched in 1997 FIFTH ELEMENT 4 times and ANACONDA around may 97. i went overseas and upon my return in september, saw that cathay was already closed down. i even saw through the grilled door a poster for CON AIR. it was the best cinema in malaysia. the wide screen was unsurpassed and still is. the dolby stereo accentuated the sound coming from the film. it was an experience. the best memories were from the great films of the 80s – ALIENS, PREDATOR, DIE HARD, RETURN OF THE JEDI, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. there was even an orange julius next to the cinema which closed down in the mid 80s. the opening trailer of cathay cinema mempersembahkan made all the bulu roma stick up. this was replaced by a dull light bulbed pavillion theatres mempersembahkan from 1992. but it did not spoil watching a great stallone flick like CLIFFHANGER. the music and sound remains in my memory. and the hand painted giant posters were wow..
