Located in Queensbury, a district that today is in the north-west of Greater London, the Plaza Cinema opened on 7th February 1938. The building occupied an imposing corner site on Beverley Drive and was designed for the small London based General Cinema Theatres circuit by noted cinema architect Cecil Masey.

It was taken over by the Essoldo Cinemas circuit in 1949 and re-named Essoldo Cinema in 1950. It was closed on 12th August 1967 with Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady".

On 11th October 1967 it re-opened as an Essoldo Bingo Club. This was taken over by the Classic Cinemas chain from 2nd April 1972 and operated as a Classic Bingo Club. In Autumn 1972, Classic put forward plans to sub-divide the building into a four screen cinema, but this never happened.

Bingo continued for a while, but by the early 1980's the building had beeen demolished and housing built on the site. A nearby street which ran alongside the building was named 'Essoldo Way' in memory of the cinema.
