Designed by C.C. Chadwick and William Watson of Leeds for proprietors John Claughton and Lionel Harpham, the New Crescent Super Cinema opened on August 1, 1921 with the silent British movie "Build Thy House". There was an organ and a 'first class orchestra'.

The architects made the most of a steeply sloping site and a small variety stage was included.

The cinema closed July 13, 1968 and was converted for bingo casino usage.

This has recently ceased and the building is empty and for sale (Feb 2002).

hi there
just to inform people that the crescent cinema is now a home deco shop( chiltern mills) and all interior is gutted, the bingo side of things still remains but i hate to see (as many other people may) all of these amasing buildings and cinemas just fall into the gutters, like york also
