Built on part of the site of the old Sherwood Forester Regimental Barracks, the Showcase Cinemas opened on 17th November 1988, just two weeks after Derby's first multiplex; the AMC had opened. This gave the city of Derby the distinction of being the first in the UK to have two multiplex cinemas operating.
