Originally opened in May 1919 as a live theatre, known as the Teatro Grand Splendid it was built for empresario Max Glucksman. It was converted into a cinema in the late-1920's and continued until closing in the late 1990's. The ceiling has paintings by Italian artist Nazarino Orlandi.

Since 2000 it serves as 'El Ateneo' possibly the most luxurious of all the bookshops in the world! The architect for the conversion was Fernando Manzone, who retained as much as possible of the original decorative details. There is a cafe located on the former stage.

This is the Cine Alvear in 1943. There are some similarities to the Grand Splendid, but it may be a different theater. The photo is from Life Magazine:
