The purpose-built Scala Cinema had uninterrupted views of the screen with tip-up seating throughout. Opening day was April 6th 1914 and listed as "the new picture palace" for the Bitterne Park and St. Deny's districts of greater Southampton. Varied programmes were shown from 6:30pm at prices ranging from tuppence to half a shilling.

A change of name to Lyric came in 1926 while seating was dropped to accommodate 410 patrons, but prices were raised to double the old admissions of its former owners. Locals called the Scala/Lyric a "bug hutch" and the manager was a strict disciplinarian in keeping children in order by patrolling the aisles with a stick.

Wartime saw the 1940 closure with the building used later as a warehouse for a pharmacy company then as a bathroom equipment showroom.
