Located in the Kadikoy Municipality, a cosmopolitan district of Istanbul. Building commenced in 1924 and continued until 1927 to the designs of parliamentarian Sureyya Ilmen Pasa. It has a foyer inspired by the Champs Elyees Theatre, Paris and has an interior based on German architecture. Originally conceived as an opera house and theatre, the stage and dressing rooms area was never completed and it opened as a cinema.

It remained a cinema until 2005 when work began on completing the building and it re-opened as the Sureyya Opera House on 14th December 2007. It is the oldest opera house on the Anatolian side of the city, and the sixth in Istanbul. It will be the home of the Istanbul Opera & Ballet Company.
