"My mother and I would go on Monday nights (circa 1933) because that is the night they gave away free dishes. On weekends, admission was 10 cents for kids. They showed Western serials, comics - we'd be there for hours."

The theater has been expanded and converted into a restaurant.

the website oldstatenisland.tripod.com has a great photo of this theatre.

As a result of garth's comment I paid a visit to the oldstatenisland website and had a wave of nostalgia overtake me. The last time I saw the Strand was in 1948. As a kid living in Brooklyn, a visit to my aunt and uncle, who lived in Elltingville. was a trip to the country. This was the pre Verrazano bridge period. The only theatre in the area was the Strand in Great Kills...the next town down the line. I remember vividly walking a couple miles on a dirt road one night to get to the Strand; all the while listening to a baseball game on my portable radio. It was a great little theatre.

A vintage photo of the Strand Theater can be seen here.

The Arirang Restaurant is currently located at 23 Nelson. 15 Nelson is a post office, so something is amiss. Perhaps someone local has more information on this.

Your right, 15 Nelson is a post office and has been for many years.

Maybe the theater address is 23 Nelson. I don't know.

Click on the link that I posted on Oct 15, 2005. There is a photo of the Strand Theater. On the left side of the photo is an address. I'm not sure if it reads 23 or 25.

I can't tell either.

There are addresses on buildings on both sides, though. The house on the right looks like 25.
posted by ken mc on Dec 5, 2007 at 5:19pm
Okay, I think the one on the right is 25 which should make the Strand 23.

Actually, the Arirang Hibachi Restaurant gives an address of 23a Nelson Ave. That should make the original theater building address 23 Nelson Ave.
