Opened in 1990 as an eight screen complex inside the trendy Cocowalk shopping and entertainment complex, this was an immediate success and the whole Coconut Grove area was forever altered by the success of the Cocowalk Center. In 1994 AMC added eight more screens just as Cobb was opening the Mayfair 10 across the street.

It was closed by AMC in September 2009.

AMC is scheduled to vacate Cocowalk by year's end. Muvico Theatres is poised to replace the theater space with one of their luxury megaplexes, targeting a late 2009 opening date.

Cocowalk must be one the the most uninviting of all multiplexes. Each time I've been there i see people getting lost trying to get in and get out. Very rude and uninterested staff!
When does the Muvico Complex open?

Haven't set foot at Cocowalk in a decade. As with any destination in the Grove, major trial-and-error locating it. Finally figured out a back way from U.S. 1 to the Cocowalk garage and back (wouldn't be surprised if it's shut off by now).

Main reasons for my going there: limited releases (when the "windows" between theatrical and home video were most of a year), an early 1990s revival of "El Cid," and the local premiere of the Miami-filmed, ill-fated "The Perez Family" with Marisa Tomei (and her ring of bodyguards) in attendance.

Architecture: AMC's late 1980s/early 90s boilerplate, offering auditoriums of varying sizes (an improvement over their 70s "tube" format), as also found at the now-demolished Fashion Island, Sheridan, and Oceanwalk. Appreciated the larger rooms' accommodations for widescreen.

A PDF of Muvico's original announcement from November 2007:

Opening date has since been postponed to Fall 2009. Cocowalk as a whole fell on hard times in recent years (now competing with other trendy destinations in Miami), hence new ownership and a new tenant mix.

... and Muvico's takeover date is anyone's guess right now. AMC still operates Cocowalk at this time.

Looks like AMC finally shut it down last Sunday, September 13th.

So is Muvico stepping in or is Coconut Grove cinemaless for the first time in years?

A local blogger reports:

AMC also turned over the keys to new owners (Liebe Entertainment Group) at Davie's Ridge Plaza 8 in July. They've now pared back to four locations in Dade/Broward (having left Palm Beach years ago).

A search on "Muvico" at the blog above might capture further updates there in the months ahead (including the news that the proposed bowling alley component has been scrapped, and the screen count will now be 14).

An October 28 Miami Herald article claims that a splinter group of top ex-Muvico executives (Paragon Entertainment)will be taking over this site.
