The island of Guam had only one drive-in theatre, the Marine Drive-In. It opened on March 1, 1957, screening the 1955 western “Texas Lady” with Claudette Colbert, Barry Sullivan and Ray Collins. The second feature was the 1955 docudrama “Wakamba”. The new airer was opened by Harold Dwight Look. I believe Johnston Theatres Inc. ‘might’ have been the operator of the drive-in. Johnston Theatres also operated the Johnston Theatre, Gaiety Theatre and New Agat Theatre (all indoor theatres). The new drive-in had a 400-car capacity with in-a-car speakers. During its short run the drive-in screened mostly family type movies. In May of 1971, Typhoon Amy came close to Guam, and while it did not impact the island, it caused some damage to the screen. The drive-in was closed before that on April 18, 1971. I guess Typhoon Amy just nailed the coffin shut for good on the Marine Drive-In. Look said later that the drive-in was never profitable. He said there simply aren’t enough drive-in patronizes on the island. The last two features to be screened were Charles Bronson in “When Hell Broke Loose” & Rita Tushingham & Oliver Reed in “The Trap”. Look sold the property in 1986 to a Hong Kong businessman, James Lee for $2 million. Harold ‘Dwight’ Look who was a farmer and land owner made his fortune in construction and development. He died in September 2002.

I was stationed at NAS Agana in 1979. I never knew that was there at one time.

Located on Ypao Road. May have closed in 1974 when blown over by Typhoon Pamela?
