The Winter Gardens was built in 1924 to enclose an oper-air amphitheatre which had opened in 1895. It was designed by ironfounder Walter MacFarlane and is a circular hall, manufactured in cast iron. The exterior has Art Nouveau features, with corner towers.

In use as a variety theatre for many years, the seating capacity was for 1,100. This use ended in the 1970's and the building became derelict.

It was restored in the 1990's and is now in use as a concert hall, with a 97 seat cinema, a restaurant and information kiosk in the building. The Winter Gardens is a Grade A Listed building.
