The Aberdare Cinema opened in 1912, operated by Mr V.W. Rowe, who also operated the Empire Pictorium. It was famous for its tiled frontage that ran longitudinally along Canon Street. Many local people used used to say that it looked more like a swimming baths than a cinema.

The Aberdare Cinema was equipped for talkies in the early 1930's when a Picturetone system was installed. It was closed in around 1959.

YOUR COMMENTS

Dear Editha,
I have enjoyed beyond belief the contributions you and others have posted here in the last few weeks regarding all the wonderful buildings in South Wales in the Glamorgan area.
Terrific reading!
I posted the threads for the old Swansea main cinemas such as the Plaza, Albert Hall, Castle, Carlton etc (together with photos!) over the last few years and was wondering if you had more detailed info other than what I was able to provide.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Kind regards.
