According to my facts Georgia Square Mall 1-2-3-4 Cinemas opened the opening day of the mall on February 11, 1981 as a General Cinema Theatre.

It was located towards the back of the mall. Upon entering the mall you'd spot that white open little box office much like the one at Regency Mall 1-2-3 in Augusta.

I was suprised by the opening date because when I came up from Augusta to help Craig Zacker who was in desperate need of a good second man after being talked into it, the mall just had a worn look like it could've opened in the late-1970's.

So it opened in a town made up of ABC-Plitt Theatres, Georgia Theatres, an independent theatre, The Alps, and the Beechwood Cinemas. It made a huge inpact. Soon the Athens Drive-In near the mall would close.

The concession stand was large. You went down 10 steps or so, and you would step down into the theatre to the concessions stand. When Georgia Bulldog basketball players would come for a movie their heads would almost hit the ceiling. I think we had two one-sheet frames. At one time we didn't have any one-sheets so I put up some old ones from the 1970's. I heard lots of comments, "that's been on TV!"

We played the usual midnight shows and they played quite well. Mr. Zacker even played "Rocky Horror Picture Show" a movie we had to pull out of Augusta! (see Regency Mall 1-2-3).

The crowds in Athens were well behaved, sort of dull after Augusta. The booth was run by Herbert Smith, and his wife Miss Anne ran the box office for years. Karen Shaw was our other box office girl and she was a licensed pilot! She was a sweetheart. Pam - Lars - Tommy - and so many others. We had a good staff. Lars would always change the names on midnight shows like "Rocky Horror Picture Show" was "Transvestites A Go-Go" and such.

1983's "The Big Chill" was probably one of the longest running films to play at Georgia Square Mall. Sam Peckinpah's last movie, "The Osterman Weekend" played there - a great looking one sheet.

Singer Kenny Rogers, an Athens resident, came to see "Deal of the Century" and I was off in the mall when he presented a $100 bill. The box office girl couldn't take it unless a manager was there so he had to walk over to a restaurant to break the bill. I apologized to him when he came out for not being there. He said, 'it's no big deal, I worked in a theatre before'. After seeing "Deal of the Century" I'm surprised he didn't demand a refund!

Charles Pileggi was the other assistant manager. Mr. Zacker, Pileggi, and myself shared shared a trailer unti Mr. Zacker could move his family up to Athens. As I remember, Charles kept forgetting to pay the bills after we gave him the money. Often the gas or cable would be off. The warm theatre was a welcome relief!

Lots of out of town college football teams seem to come out to our theatres Friday night before playing Georgia on Saturday. Hershell Walker came to see "Vacation". I saw "The Dead Pool" there while my wife Rochelle and newborn son Sean Rogers watched "Roger Rabbit" (Sean slept).

Five more cinemas would be built outside the mall for Georgia Square Mall - all GCC theatres. Craig wanted a golf cart! But I don't think he ever got one.

I ended my theatre career in Athens at Georgia Square Mall. The cinemas inside the mall are long gone. I've been wanting to go by there one day. A large food court now takes that space. The five cinemas outside the mall are dollar theatres, and are run by Georgia Theatres.

Mike that is an awesome story. Kenny Rogers is a bonafide counrty lehgend, I am proud to have seen him perform twice...How do you feel about his recent facial surgery procedure? Are you pro or con new Kenny Rogers?

Con on the new Kenny Rogers. He came to the Imperial Theatre in Augusta,Ga. When he was still with the NEW EDITION. He saw DIRTY MARY & CRAZY LARRY. He wanted a cup of Ice ,But the manager could not give him a free cup because they were an inventory item.So Kenny walked next door to SNAPPY'S a little hamburger joint next to the IMPERIAL to get a free cup. What a bone head manager,I would have given him a cup and wrote it off as damaged.

I think it was KENNY ROGERS AND THE FIRST EDITION,My mistake.

When i first arrived at GEORGIA SQUARE MALL CINEMAS i had hoped to score big on some one sheets. To my surprize there were none in the theatre. It didn't take long to realize the posters are favorites of dorm rooms at UGA. I can count on one hand how many folks asked for one sheets in Augusta.

Another thing about the projectionists. They stayed to themselves unlike all the projectionists i had worked with in Augusta.Mr.Smith the head operator would hardly ever come in to our offices and chat.Maybe that was being a good Union man. His relief guy,Mike was the same way. Nothing wrong,Just different.

Yes,like so many old theatre people it is easy to go right back to work at a theatre,But withall these new theatres 20 plexs and more there might be a bit more to training. I came up to GEORGIA SQUARE between jobs and to help Mr.Zacker out.He was training the Assistant Charles Pileggi how to do an ad for the paper and he let it be known that he did not need my advice.I killed time behind the box office.Having put together ads before.Mr.Zacker was pretty good at the ads.

Bad thing about GCC we were on Salary. Had we been hourly we would have made alot more. My take home for 1983 was about $150.00 a week! That is working GCC hours sometimes a Kid movie,Regular features, and the ever present weekend midnight shows. I am also glad that GeorgiaSquare Mall 1.2.3.4. has it is own place on CT. Thanks Nick.

I noticed MIDNIGHT SHOWS were much calmer in Athens than Augusta.Even when we played ROCKY HORROR we did not have the headaches we had in Augusta.{SEE REGENCY 1,2.3.CINEMAS in Augusta.}

GEORGIA SQUARE MALL was huge compared to REGENCY in Augusta. The popcorn room at REGENCY was like a Closet. Our stock room was so small that often we would put Drink cups in the Projection Booth which teed off the operators,But there was no room. There was enought room at GEORGIA SQUARE in the Popcorn room for employees to have a desk to study by,since most of our staff was UGA students.

One night have the friday night Midnight show ,Mike The relief Projectionist throws a party , so CHARLES and I go. Charles gets so wasted i have to put him to bed.His hangover is so bad Mr.Zacker and me both end up working a double. But that is the theatre business.

First time in Athens I noticed the theatre hired off duty cops to work the MIDNIGHT SHOWS.Andy was the cop we always got and he was super cool.He hunted all his meat for his family, wild game hunter. He would always bring SOMETHING for us to eat.

MR.MOM opened to good crowds.I was glad because i was a big TERRI GARR fan. But was nothing like THE BIG CHILL.People in that city loved that film.

Electrical problems one morning! It was a bad 20 amp breaker,I told ZACK i could change out a breaker, but he called a Electrical company to change it. I could have saved GCC some money.

Doggone it,Charles has a girlfriend in the Mall. Flowers and such. She works upstairs on the far level.Of course,I handle the cinemas cause Mr.Zacker knocks off at 5 pm.Speaking of girlfriends mine comes in one night from Augusta,We met at REGENCY.Glad she didn't catch me hugging a Concessionstand girl.
posted by MikeRogers on Nov 2, 2009 at 3:38pm
Speaking of girls,Mr.Zacker wants Pam to train in management. He wants US to start showing her the ropes.Karen Shaw the Box office girl has been here a long time, but she is happy selling tickets. It blew my mind to find out she is a Lincesed Pilot.Mrs,Anne,Mr.Smith's wife brings some the best food for us.I guess she knows we are living off those 89 cent pizzas at Kroger.

You know i am glad we are the Cinemas of choice for the UGA Football and Basketball programs,Mr.Zacker gets comp tickets to any game and good seats. He gets about 10 tickets a game.I think he is a DAWG fan and not a FLORDIA STATE fan anymore.

Getting something called a TELZON computer to inventory the stock.I prefer a paper and pencil,Almost always i get a Concessionstand girl to do it,It gets them away from the counter,They always do my BOR'S.Never did them in Augusta, ain't going to start now, Heck, really when you come down to it i count the money and make sure it gets in the bank.{2009 now everything,i bet is computer, got out at the right time}.

WE did it at REGENCY MALL and Mr.Zacker does it here he inventories the whole theatre everynght.I never understood why.We certainly did not do it when i was with ABC PLITT THEATRES.Maybe it's a Zack thing.
But like i said the girls do most of it for me. I hate counting.

Yeah, ROCKY HORROR did okay on MIDNIGHT SHOWS,but i can't Leave out ANIMAL HOUSE which was a big hit with the UGA crowd. I still think this town is not a big LATE SHOW town.
I was able to get a few feet of Belushi from a bad cut in the print.Mr.Smith was going to toss it in the trash. It was right about where he yelled "FOOD FIGHT."

Oh the good old days the stories I could tell you about my days with the "LOEWS" gang in Nashville, it would be rated at least a "R".Our theaters also ways smelled funny and I do not mean popcorn.
posted by tlsloews on Nov 2, 2009 at 5:46pm
TISLOEWS, I read the comment policy on CT and honor it, but like any theatre dog will tell you i have R and X rated stories and i am talking mainstreem first run theatres. I only wish all my friends that worked with at ABC THEATRES and GCC that i am still friends with would add to what i post, I can only remember so much.
They enjoy the heck out of the old days, but are too shy or something.

Mike appreciate your comment I am 52 years old now and wish I was still in that business,I had the chance to move to Dallas with LOEWS but turned them down, They were opening a new quad, looked it up on C.T. and it has already been closed and tore down. The new houses do not seem to last too long.
posted by tlsloews on Nov 4, 2009 at 2:42pm
YEAH, TISLOEWS as i have said on my past withNATIONAL HILLS ,COLUMBIA SQUARE and THE IMPERIAL.I got in in 1974,just about the time the theatre business was about to change. At least in Augusta.I did get couple of good years in promotions and such at ABC THEATRES. Time I got to GEORGIA SQUARE it was pretty much run them in and out. I don't think we could even fit into the business today. And with 20 screens! Run the booth, manage the floor. I mean here in Augusta i noticed cops on duty at FIRST RUN houses who wants the headache?

Mike...that's a great story! I love the 'personal' touch in your descriptions of co-workers and various incidents that occured. The Kenny Rogers incident is priceless! But just as you said...you're glad you're not in the business anymore. I worked at a drive-in back in 1969 so I had a small taste of the business. It was fun back then but today it's an entirely different world. Keep posting more of these great stories!!

Mike 6 posts is enough. 5 would have done, just kidding. From one theater dog to another, your story of having a Bud with James Brown on another site was great. Used to drink a few myself AFTER the money was in the bank and waited for the last show to end.Locked a guy in the Loews Crescent one time, do not know how. He had to use the pay phone in the lobby to call the police who called my boss to come let him out.It was all good in the end though.

As I said at COLUMBIA SQUARE CINEMAS one of best friends and fellow assistant manager< even though we were house managers.Basiclly, assistants since the city managers office was there. we were sipping a cold one after everyone had left and about midnight out walks a guy who had fallen asleep.Tommy and me standing there with our mouths open. I am sure it has happen alot. I have somthing posted on the LOWES VENDOME you might want to read.

Big MIDNIGHT SHOW HIT....AMERICAN WERWOLF IN LONDON.As in Augusta, this film brings in the money. I would say while WIZARDS was one of our best performers at late shows at ABC PLITT THEATRES,while at GCC this is one popular flick.
posted by MikeRogers on Nov 6, 2009 at 8:38pm
Thanks for the plugs!! Will see if it does any good. "American Werewolf" was funny and frightening. And I never saw an uglier werewolf! It also did very well at every theatre it played in Tampa from first runs to the dollar house.

Nick, It is a pity if anyone is a hard core cinema treasurer does not see the great stories you have from TAMPA.
