This theater sits on the northwest side of San Antonio. The Woodlawn Theatre opened in 1946, and the world premiere of "The Alamo" starring John Wayne was held here in 1960.

Now used for the performing arts in the area. The neon sign, which no longer turns on, has not been touched.

The Woodalwn theatre was designed by top world movie palace designer John Eberson and opened in 1946. The world premiere of THE ALAMO opened in 1960 at The Woodlawn. The theatre has been through many chances over the years. The marquee is still there with just the underside working. A bid of $18,000 was given to restore to original working condition. Anyone want to help? The run down theatre is the home of the Actors Theatre Of San Antonio (ATSA) and the sketch comedy group the Oxymorons. Two stages: One in the main area and one where the balcony was at one time. Both seat about 120. ATSA is a 23 year old group which produces for the most part non-
commercial and "off the wall" theatre as well as classic American Playwrights. Currently showing THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. For other
information please call 210-722-5791. Jerry (ATSAGUY@aol.com) .

The Woodlawn is being renovated. I was there a few days ago. It has been completely gutted. The stage has been greatly enlarged. The balcony theatre which was built in 1975 has been removed and it is now a wonderful balcony again! The "satellite projection booth" that was hanging from the ceiling for the big downstairs auditorium has been demolished. The new owner is going to have plays on stage, and occasionally run film. When the big screen gets lit up again, it will be from the original projection room! Nice seats are to be installed, as well as some top notch projection equpment. The wonderful glass bricks that were covered up with the "renovation" in 1975 have been uncovered, and are once again giving the Woodlawn an elegant flair.

The Woodlawn Theatre is now under the operation of Amphisphere Theatre Productions and will be reopening September 30, 2006. We have reduced the theatre seating to install some dinner theatre seating and increase the size of the stage. The theatre will show classic movies, independent film, artshows, musical theatre, live music, live comedy. The origional architecture is being restored and will preserve the 1950's Art Deco Style for many more generations to enjoy. For more information go to www.amphisphere.com

2007 Update. Amphisphere Productions at the WOODLAWN Theatre had NINE live performances! There are plans for another awesome year...starting off the year is TAMING OF THE SHREW, which is the only non-musical show. GREASE is the word! Coming to the Woodlawn February - April 2008!

Amphisphere is now a non-profit organization and in need of sponsors. Please contact the theatre to help keep this historic theatre alive.

In addition to performances, classes are offered in the evening and day (for homeschoolers).

Any chance anyone can add present day photos of the exterior and interior of what seems to have turned out to be a nicely fixed up theater?

The address does not work because the street is spelled wrong. When the street is spelled correct the address works and a photo shows up, which if it is scanned will show the theater.
