River Oaks Theater 4 was built and opened in 1978. It was attached to the building housing theater 1. It could hold 900 people and had the rocking chair seats like theater 1. It's premiere attraction was "Magic". Theater 4 is still open today though now it is known as theater 10 (with theater 1 now known as theater 9).

A six plex on the other side of River Oaks Mall was built in the 90's and Loews oddly decided to change the screen numbers. Theater 4 is now used mostly as a second screen for whatever movie is in the bigger theater.

Last time I was in the auditorium (several years ago) it was a mess. The curtain was filthy, many seats were broken or unusable and the sound quality was muffled.

The theater was closed in January 2006.

Loews used to take such care with their theatres, they are qwuickly becoming the new UA. Run them down, loose attendance and close them.

That's okay, the Lansing just down the road will benefit from the closure of the River Oaks. If big behemoths like AMC don't want your money, then by all means give it to the little guys like Jenco (which owns the Lansing).

Thanks for the list JRS40. Now I know where my dad saw "The Onion Field" & "Prince of the City". I've got a list for theaters 2,3,&4 myself, and I'll look through them and post it here.

Was the 12/1/78 release of "Saturday Night Fever" the PG-Version or the original R-Rated Version?
posted by jimpiscitelli on Dec 23, 2007 at 6:05pm
I don't think the PG rated version was released until 1979 so I am guessing this was the R version.

Fortunately Loew's no longer exists. AMC took them over. A little too late though. I think AMC would've left this one and original #1 open.
