The former Earl Theatre, which opened in 1936, is literally a few doors down from Yankee Stadium. The lobby now houses a restaurant. The former auditorium still exists, but I do not know what it is used for, if anything, and if any of the theatre interior still remains. The spire above the marquee evokes imagery of the Empire State Building.

The auditorium has been used for a flea market and snack bar in recent years. Used entrance on Jerome Ave. Not sure if it is in use now.

I worked my first shift as a projectionist in this grand old theater. I actually have a cup dispenser that was used in this theater. You know the ones that you put a penny in and got a cone shaped cup. I loved working there and had many good times. The first movies I ran there were Dirty Harry and The Wild Bunch. I'll never forget those times. It was a ball. I only wish I had some photos of the building's marquee

The Unity Restaurant is no longer there. It's been replaced by a new bar/restaurant.

The electric roof sign of the Earl Theatre can be seen in the background of a vintage photo here: www.bronxboard.com/photopg16.html

I would love to see pictures of the Earl if anyone has any. Especially the Marquee

When I was a college student in the early 1960's, I worked in an ice cream parlor across the street from the Earl named Addie Vallins. On Saturday nights we used to get a crowd when the movie ended. Being around the corner from Yankee Stadium, sometimes a few of the Yankee players would come in for ice cream. Thanks for the photos KenRoe.

Here's a 1941 view of the marquee and roof sign (which was changed regularly to match the main feature). This double bill originated on the RKO circuit and reached the Earl a few weeks later: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a18/Warrengwhiz/bxearl.jpg

This photo looks alot like the photo posted in the above comment.

All of my photo links point back to the source of the photo. None of the photos that I link to are removed from their source or altered in any manner. I don't see any source given for the 1941 photo in the comment above this one. Who should be credited for the 1941 photo that you linked to "Warren"?

No photo was harmed in the posting of this link!

Now who's being ridiculous? Is this a tribunal? And who appointed a phantom calling itself "Lost Memory" as the judge? Some prompt answers are needed from the management of Cinema Treasures.

Hi,

Does anyone have a high res copy of the Earl. The one listed at http://cinematreasures.org/theater/5968_0_2_0_C/ is only 360 X 480. Does anyone have bigger?

Thanks,
Steve

A tribunal? It was a question. Didn't you see the question mark? Maybe you can't tell the difference. I'll ask you again, who should we give credit to for the photo that you posted? You are so concerned about me giving proper credit for photos, its time for you to do the same. No one appointed me as judge and no one appointed you as judge either. You outrank no one on this site. And don't ever be so arrogant to think that you do. Your just another member here. No more and no less.

You should credit Warren G. Harris for the photo displayed in my Photobucket album. It comes from my personal collection of theatre photographs. If you doubt that I am Warren G. Harris, that's your problem. You don't need to put quotes around "Warren," which is my actual first name. I have no need to hide behind a false identity like you do. "Lost Memory" indeed! I hope and pray that you eventually find it.

Are you telling me that you personally took that photo? Or did you purchase the photo? My question is, where did the photo originally come from? I don't doubt that you are "Warren G. Harris" and I honestly couldn't care less who you are.

One reason that many people use "pseudonyms" or "Screen Names" is to prevent an unscrupulous person from using someones real name and personal information to harass them. I'm sure that "Warren G. Harris" would never do anything like that, but someone else might.

Whether I took the photo myself or purchased it is none of your business. Have you asked "Back in the Bronx" the same question? I suspect that you'll get the same answer, or none at all. END of discussion!

Its none of my business? Thats funny. If you legally obtained your photos, you wouldn't hesitate to tell me. You actually told me what I wanted to know. And I doubt that all of the photos on the Back in the Bronx site are owned by that site. I found a few of those photos on other sites with credits to who they belong to. And now this discussion is over. It's been very educational. Thanks.

Lo Mem, how dare you insinuate that my refusal to answer your questions is proof that I use "illegal" images in my Photobucket scrapbook. Why would anyone cooperate with a phantom who also obviously hates their guts? Your slur tactics remind of the McCarthy witchhunts of the late 1940s. I thought that era was over, but perhaps your alias conceals a disciple of the scurrilous, extreme right-wing Senator.

I see that you are back to your childish antics of calling people names. For someone that complains about other people posting off topic comments, you seem to have no problem doing it yourself. Your tactics are getting as stale and as boring as the majority of your recent comments. Although the comment that you just posted did make me laugh so it wasn't a total waste. Have a nice day in preschool with the other kiddies.

Thanks for the posting of the picture. I have fond memories when I worked there as a projectionist. What a grand theater it was at one time.

I saw this theater last night when I went to a Yankee Game. It is currently being used as a sports bar, or at least the lobby on both River Rd, and the other lobby on Jerome Ave is. I don't know what if anything remains of the interior...any information would be appreciated.

The former auditorium, reportedly as having been in very bad shape, has been recently gutted and work are being done inside for the expansion of the Sports Bar.
