Built in 1948, the State Theatre served downtown Kingman just off old Route 66. It replaced the Lang Theatre, which had opened in 1931.

Reportedly the theatre closed shortly after shortly after the 40 went through north of the town, bypassing this section of 66. I'm told the last picture playing was "Star Wars", but since that opened in 1977, perhaps they meant "Empire Strikes Back" (1980).

An antique/used furniture store now uses the space. The screen is gone, but the seats are all still in place and the stage still exists. The lobby and old restrooms are used for storage. The current entrance is on Beale Street, but my research indicates the old entrance probably was on Fourth Street, on the corner.

The manager in 1959 was Ira Rawlings. In 1961 it was Jason Penhallegon, according to local phone books.

The interior is worn, but not in too bad a shape. However its location and lack of parking make it doubtful this would ever be brought back as a theatre.

I spent the night in Kingman on my LA to Chicago Route 66 trip this summer. I wasn't aware of the theater, though.

Hello everyone

thank you for all the input i have receved. but i am still haveing owner probloms here, as of last monday. but i am still persuing this venture. i am looking for help still. i could use finance help. but i am not asking for a handout, for i know any bussiness is one that takes time, and a love for the time we love are buildings. i had seen this building Dec 23,2006. thought how nice it would be to bring her back as a theater and multi use place. sure its not in the best of shape, but i have looked beond the scars. i have found a wonderful ladie and guy in Il. that have been kind to my for a month now. Thank you Mark and Bev. you have great equipment, that will work great for my ( future ) lady here. i know its one day at a time here.

ki am thankful for what time i have had here to enjoy post's and stories for everyones love for the arts. old buildings are dieing each day around us. and i have a feeling here for the (State Theater ) here in Kinman. is on her last days. i had placed a bid, with other biders also

i do not know what will be of the property if the other bider wins this war.

ok i have rambled on to much here

Thank you all again

I've seen this theater and it would take a lot of money to claen it up and get it back in shape again. It would be nice to have it as a perfroming arts center as part of a downtown revival, but like downtown Kingman, it is off the beaten trail, has no parking and would have a very small lobby. It's hard to beat the Movies of Kingman, since their top ticket is about $5. Who ended up with the winning bid?
