The 20th Century opened in 1940, built for William David Gross, who also owned the Coliseum Theatre in Juneau.

Around 1940, the 2/8 Kimball organ from the Coliseum was moved into the 20th Century, which was fortunate, because a couple years later, the Coliseum was destroyed in a fire. (The Kimball organ was removed from the 20th Century in 1976 and now is located in Juneau's State Office Building).

The 20th Century was twinned in the early 80s by creating a second auditorium out of the balcony. The auditoriums were remodeled in 2004, and feature DTS sound. Both auditoriums feature the original 1940 Simplex projectors.

The current name of Gross 20th Century makes me laugh. It could be interpreted as a comment on the last century!
