Situated in downtown Seattle across from the Washington State Convention Center at Seventh and Pike. This sixteen-plex looks more like an office building on the outside than a movie theater. The non traditional open counter box office is located at street level. From there take the nearby escalators to the second level which features eight auditoriums, a large concession stand, bulk candy station and espresso stand. The restrooms are on a mezzanine level over looking the second level.

From the second floor take another escalator to the third floor which also has eight additional auditoriums and a large concession area. The second and third levels are nearly identical. All levels have huge almost unobstructed views of outside and the large archway to the Convention Center. The three floors have high two-story ceilings which are decorated with hanging artwork.

AMC acquired this theatre, along with the rest of the Loews Cineplex chain, in January 2006. As a condition of approving the merger, the state and federal governments required Loews and AMC to sell ten theatres, including this one. It became a Regal cinema on September 15, 2006.

The best (and only) aspect of this cineplex are the spacious lobbies. Any kudos should end there. Built before the stadium seating craze, the theaters have very little slope to them. When it opened, customers complained in droves regarding the fact that the high back seats blocked out the bottom part of the screen. So Cineplex-Odeon (the operator at the time) hurriedly replaced all 3000 seats with a more standard design. The replaced seats ended up at the Woodinville 12 in suburban Seattle.

As it is, the theaters are poorly designed little boxes. Even the two 'large' houses are nothing special. I avoid this theater like the plague and haven't been there in years.

Saw a picture here today and it was an average modern city multiplex, with big screens, bright images, clear sound and lots of coming attractions. Loews does run a decent show, so its mainstream fare is decently presented. I spoke to another patron, and he told me he prefers the nearby AMC, because the bathrooms are on the same floor as as the auditoriums. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. We could do worse.

This is one of ten theatres that AMC and Loews are selling off as part of their merger, to satisfy antitrust concerns. See this news item for more information and discussion.

does anyone know when the Meridian opened?

The Meridian 16 opened in November 1996. Regal's purchase was no doubt aimed at keeping another vendor out of the market.
