Built in 1930 for Paramount, the theater was designed as a first run movie house.

After 28 years, the building was sold in 1958 amid hard times for ticket sales. No one was able to resurrect the Paramount Theater to its former glories and the theater closed in 1977 and was turned over to the city of Peekskill.

The theater was reopened briefly in 1979 for performances with a medium degree of success. The theater closed again and was renovated for its second encore in 1981 following a strong grassroots campaign to save the old Paramount.

The theater has remained open and vibrant during the 1980's, 1990's and into this century. It is still run by a non-profit organization that uses the proceeds to further improve the theater and its prospects for the future.

This Paramount is virtually identical to the Paramount across the Hudson River in Middletown, NY. They were built simultaneously and opened within 15 days of each other in June, 1930.

Finally the restrooms are getting a makeover. Plus, the outgoing Governor (former Peekskill Mayor) just put a heafty sum into the state budget for capital improvements.
Take a look at some photos from the theater.

It's not a great theater, but it's very nice and hasn't been overrestored, so you still feel like you're in an old theater. The current projection/sound system is first rate; it's a pleasure to see movies there.
