The Gateway was originally planned as a six screen. Following the closing of the Queen, the Sandcastle and the Trolley North, the plans for the Gateway were revived and the theatre became an eight screen theatre.

It was opened in 1993 by Consolidated Theatres and was later taken over by Cinema Star Theatres. The independent Red Carpet Cinemas chain took over in January 2006.

Per the January 2006 issue of "In Focus" magazine, this theater (along with Spanish Fork Movieplex, Five-Star Cinemas and Showcase Cinemas) has been acquired by "A new theatrical circuit dubbed Red Carpet Cinemas."
