Just an update thought anyone who has been long awaiting the Ocala Drive-In re-opening as long as I have may want to know that I happened to find. A grand opening date on the drive-in.com website today of July 29th. No other info as far as what the movies will be that day.
Just listened to their message today. Still being remodeled. No projected opening date on message.
I didn’t include “lost” because he is no longer on CT. Hated to see Lost go,but i am sure he had his reasons.
The Ocala Drive-In is still being remodeled, but should be ready to open by June 2011. Please call them at 352-629-1325 to keep abreast of the actual opening date. They’re putting a tremendous amount of work into restoring the old drive-in and it should be pretty terrific once they’re ready.
Chuck AND Lost Memory though LM (Ken) doesn’t contribute to CT anymore and it is our great loss to this theatre site.
Yes, Thanks Chuck you supply so much info.
Thanks Chuck…as always!
According to this article at Ocala.com this drive-In was originally called Dyer’s Drive-In in 1948

Hey, Lost Memory. I think I saw that drive-in still standing while I was traveling towards Orlando and on the way back home. It was right on US 301/441. I’ll check if it got demolished or if it’s still standing when I get a chance to go there. I’ll let you know.
It looked that way with many tall weeds in sight though the screen is still there along with the drive-through ticket kios.
Chuck: I was recently in FL and happen to see this drive-in on 441 though wasn’t sure if it was still an operating drive-in. I think it is being used for a flea market now.
Here is an October 2007 article about the closing, along with another photo.

Here are some photos.
This drive-in closed in 2007. It is now for sale ($1,750,000) or lease ($3,000/M) LoopNet.
I don’t know what you mean by “true cinemascope” or “flat presentations” but I do know that the “screen” —if you can call it that— is a huge white concrete block wall. Sometimes the picture is too wide, and the left and right sides of the picture falls off and is projected onto the bushes. :) Does this help?
Can anybody who lives in Ocala tell me if this theater has true cinemascope and flat presentations. All the theaters in Tampa and Ft Lauderdale don’t. It really sucks. Movies in cinemascope hang of the end of the screen. The orignal owner Flloyd thetaers wanted the screen full at all times. Rather than have the black bars for films in flat they would rather have the scope films hang off.

I’ve lived in Ocala at various times for over 15 years, and I love this Theater! It brings back so many memories as a child. :) My dad would take me and my sister every Saturday. Most of the time, we saw only the matinee because the late show was for adults. But every once-in-a-while he would let us stay for the late picture. :) That was always a treat! The food back then was pretty good too! I’d always get a hotdog. The theater went into a slump for awhile, and it changed hands a few times. I’d say that the new owners are doing a pretty good job right now and are playing all the current movies. :) I give them two thumbs up! ;)
