A movie ad in the Camden website shows that it was open as of May 1934, with a showing of Will Rogers in “David Harum”.
A Wurlizter organ, opus 632, was installed in this theater on 3/14/1923.
Was this the same as the North Camden Theatre?
Going through the Images of America ‘South Jersey Movie Houses’ book the North Camden Theatre seems to be the only one at or even close to this location. In the Filn Daily Yearbook’s between 1941 & 1950 there is no listing for a Standard Theatre but the North Camden Theatre (465 seats) is again the only theatre in this location.
The ‘South Jersey Movie Houses’ book stated that the North Camden Theatre went over to a live burlesque house in the late 1950’s before closing for good. Could it have been re-named Standard Theatre at this time? The building (North Camden Theatre) is currently used as a church.
The Standard Theatre (203 Vine St. Camden) was not inlcuded in “South Jersey Movie Houses,” as I did not have a photograph of it as a theatre. I believe the building is still standing, and used for storage of materials.
