Peoples Theatre

Viewing: Photo | Street View

The Peoples Theatre was opened in 1913. My father told me that he went to the Peoples Theatre when he was a kid and saw many Gene Autry singing cowboy movies. It was closed in 1955.

I will be taking pictures of downtown Port Arthur soon. The site states People’s theatre was closed in the 1950’s but I grew up in the 1950’s. It must have been the 60’s. You can barely even tell the building was the People' Theatre. I am trying to research the Strand which the building no longer exits but the stripes on the sidewalk identify this theatre. There is a pavilion there now. What a loss.
http://moonlightflower.org I will post some pictures there but it will be about a month before that happens. Either there or the class site http://ths1958.com Interesting site here, does not list the Strand in Port Arthur.

So much for that link. Here is the text of a 1925 ad for some films that were playing at the Peoples. I’ll bet you didn’t know that there was another Harrison Ford in the twenties:

This ad for the Reasonable Millinery Shop at 425 Proctor (in photos) says it is in the People’s Theatre Building.

The Sanborn Maps of 1915, 1923 and 1930-1950 (in photo section), show an unnamed Theatre at 427 Proctor. No theatre was found on the maps in any year at 438 Proctor.

The news clips in the photo section note the People’s Theatre was constructed in 1913 and closed April 2, 1955.
