The Village 7 Theatres was originally called The Movies at Briarwood and was originally operated by the United Artists Theatre Circuit.
Madstone took over this defunct mall theater, I believe in 2003, and showed a mix of art films and mainstream releases. It was a nice little operation, but Madstone was not faring well financially and in 2004 they closed all their theaters nationwide, including this one. I moved away from Ann Arbor in 2004, but last I knew this theater had not been reopened.
I used to work here in the mid 80’s. It was originally 4 theaters. They added 3 more theaters behind the originals right around the time I started. The theater gained national attention by showing “The gods Must Be Crazy” for over a year.
This originally opened in 1973. It’s now run by Teicher Theatres (www.teichertheaters.com) and is called “Briarwood Dollar Movies”, with drastically reduced ticket prices ($.50 – $1.75!)

I saw Big Trouble in Little China with my college sweetheart at this plex. I don’t remember too much about the theaters; by the 70s they were not designing for impact, just efficiency, but the movie made a big impact and it has remained one of my all time favorites. The sweetheart is long gone, but I’ll always have BTiLC…
