Colonial Theatre

The Colonial Theatre opened on West Main Street on November 1, 1917. It was built for H.A. Arnold and originally sat 500. It was at the time called the largest and best-equipped theatre in central Illinois outside of Bloomington. Seating was later reduced to 460.

The Colonial Theatre closed in 1974 and was later converted into a machine shop.

There is a business called Harris Welding at 103 W. Main in Colfax. Unfortunately the photo over on the other site is so small that I can’t make out the signage. Any locals that can weigh on this would be helpful, so the address can be update.

The Colonial Theatre can be seen at upper right of this page from Motion Picture News of March 27, 1920.

As Google Maps provides no street view for this location, here is a bird’s eye view from Bing Maps.

This building has been demolished. It is now a vacant lot.
