The Nellis Theater is located on Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Similar to civilian theaters, it is air conditioned, has a concession stand and Dolby Surround Sound. The schedule varies but currently it shows one movie per evening except on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when the theater is closed. As with many military theaters, it was operated by AAFES (Army and Air Force Exchange Service). The Nellis Theatre was closed in September 2012.

Nellis AFB is home to the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron called the “Thunderbirds”.
The Nellis AFB theatre and the Luke AFB theatres (In Phoenix AZ) are virtual carbon copies of each other. Each has a Burger King right next door also.
I was on base the other day (15 Sept 2012)and noticed that there was a notice on the theatre indicating that it was to be closed permanently. Guess Netflix, the Internet, and other modern media finally caught up with it. Sad to see it go, as I saw quite afew movies there in the 1980’s.
Dawes, it could be that they didn’t want to put up the money for the conversion to digital projection and sound. That would cost them between $85,000 and $100,000. That’s why so many of the small town theatres are closing.
That is indeed most likely the reason; AAFES recently the theater at the Dyess Airforce Base for that reason.
The future of military base theaters is probably going to follow the recent pattern established by AAFES by partnering with a theater chain operator and operating the theater jointly as part of retail/entertainment center with a number of franchised operations. An example would be the ten-screen theater that was opened at Fort Bliss in 2010, jointly operated by AAFES and Southern Theatres.
