Cine Huelen

This cinema opened in the late-1950’s in the heart of Santiago. Located on Calle Huerfanos, to its right is the Tivoli, and next to that is the Cine Rex. The Cine Huelen existed in 1994 when it showed “Journey to the Center of the Earth”.

Further information about its history and status would be of interest.

Here is a photo I took of the Huelén Theatre in 1994. The film is the 1993 TV version of Journey to the Center of the Earth, which inspired dreadful comments on IMDb because the movie was perceived as being so awful. Here it is getting a commercial run in a South American house.

Huelen means “damned” in the local Mapuche language, so technically this would be the Damned Theater or Theater of the Damned. Some sources refer to the theater in the past tense, but I couldn’t confirm if it was open or closed.
