Grand Theatre

Since the mid-80’s the Grand has been called the Worm Creek Opera House. When I went through Preston in August, I noted the address was at 70 South State. It stages local productions, community events and movies three days a week. They happened to be showing the latest Harry Potter movie about a month after its release.
An exact opening date for the Grand Theatre could not be found but The Salt Lake Tribune announced on February 28, 1936 that the Grand was being taken over by Intermountain Theatres. Intermountain would then have a total of 18 houses in Utah and Idaho. In May of 1936, Intermountain would also take over the lease on the local Isis Theatre.
An October 1971 news article said the Grand was being run by Joseph Lawrence Theatres of Salt Lake City (managers of the Uptown and Villa). It appears that Lawrence had been released from a lawsuit, which accused it of defrauding the eight major film companies of boxoffice receipts from the Grand.
A January 24, 2007 news story said that The Worm Creek Opera House was undergoing renovations, with the top priority a new roof. But after asbestos was found, the county of Franklin decided to stop work until a valid lease for the building could be obtained. If there were no valid lease, the county would be responsible for any danger posed by removing the asbestos. The open roof was patched with tar to prevent exposure to the elements.
