The Middlesex Mall Cinemas was located inside the Middlesex Mall on Stelton Road at Hadley Road in South Plainfield.

It was opened by United Artists as a twin screen cinema on May 24, 1972 with “Skyjacked” and “The French Connection”.

Towards the end of it’s days, the theatre was fairly run down and ultimately closed around 1993. One of its main claims to fame was the midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on weekends.

I think this cinema actually opened with two screens, sometime in the early 1970s. I’m pretty sure it closed in 1993, because I remember seeing THE GOOD SON there and it was gone pretty soon after that. It was right near the second entrance to K-Mart, which opened right into the mall. The entire mall was gutted and became a larger series of stores.

Went to American Graffeti, the re-release of The Sound of Music and Shrinking Woman.

Not an impressive mall or an impressive theatre by any means.

Usually, a last resort.

Very bland is right. Was a twin from day one.

I remember seeing Rocky Horror there 2 times. The left side theatre had a pretty big screen from what I remember, but the right side theatre was small. I don’t remember much other than that. I do remember that the entrance was actually in the mall, which was one of the problems. They had to gate off the rest of the mall when the last shows got out.

This opened on May 24th, 1972. Grand opening ad in the photo section. It was the first twin cinema in this county.
