Here is the Garby Theater building when it was “Nails II”.
CORRECTION: I said above that you can go through image files in rapid succession by pressing the ENTER key. I meant to say the SPACE BAR key. (Press the ENTER key if you want to view an image file full screen.) In any event, you’ll find this program very intuitive….er, so much so that you won’t be thinking much about which key you’re pressing when doing this or that function, hence explaining my mix-up.
As a good basic file viewing program, and with a high degree of editing capability, and so readily accessible the moment you click on its icon, to me it’s a must have program to have on every computer. For instance, if you have a bunch of image files in a folder, open the first image file with IrfanView, and simply by pressing the ENTER key on your computer keyboard you can then go through all the image files in rapid succession, or slow if you prefer, without having to open each file separately.
You can also easily crop photos, convert them to grey scale, blur or sharpen them, intensify the color, change the coloration, increase or decrease the contrast, brighten or darken them, enlarge or reduce the image size, rotate and reverse the image, change the file format, and so on, more easily with this program than any other I’ve ever come across. So for Cinema treasures members I’d say it’s a must-have program all told.
Thanks for the link to the program TheaterBuff1. I downloaded it (download starts automatically) but haven’t installed it yet. If anyone is interested, I found the website for the Irfanview program which is here. It looks like a good program and as Bob Barker would say, “The Price Is Right”. :)
Patsy and Lost Memory, you should download Irfanview 4.00 — which is free shareware — from the following link:

Though it’s basically a file viewing program, it has full editing capability and is very easy to use. I’ve been using various versions of this program ever since I began computing and couldn’t even imagine not having it on my computer. So go ahead and download it and you’ll both be happy you did, I guarantee it!
There are four Garby Theater program calendars for sale here. I don’t have a program on my computer to edit photos Patsy. Maybe someone else can do that.
Lost Memory: I would like to see the June 1950 theatre exterior photo enlarged as it showed the curved marquee and curved building with an art deco look. BTW, I wasn’t aware that this PA town had 2 theatres, today.
Lost Memory: Your April 2, 2006 posts show contrasting photos of this theatre over the years and the subsequent changes.
Both the Garby and The Orpheum are for sale. The garby is currently split down the middle to accomodate two screens. This was done in the early eighties. Most of the original stremeline moderne lines run along the outside walls on each side. I spoke recently with a gentleman named Phil Wein who told me he used to do a magic act on the Garby stage many years ago.
After viewing the Garby on Cinema Tours I can tell you that it is not the present day Orpheum Theatre.
The Garby and The Orpheum are barely a block apart, both on Main. The Garby is now Nails II, and does sit on a corner. The Orpheum is now Sparky’s Pizza Buffet, and is sandwiched between other buildings. If anyone wants current pictures, I could provide them.
They do appear to be two different theaters. This is a modern photo of the Garber theater from CinemaTour and this is the agilitynut photo of the Orpheum theater. As John pointed out, they are different theaters. Notice the adjacent buildings in each photo are also different. The building next to the Orpheum theater is taller than the Orpheum theater building and the building next to the Garber theater appears slightly shorter.
Chuck..Look at the postcard picture of the Garby that Lost Memory posted. Then go to cinematour and look at that picture. You will notice that the facade has been changed, but you can still see parts of the building and the neighboring building to the left. The Orpheum has got to be another theater in town. And is that ever an ugly facade!!
When you look at the photo of the Orpheum it looks like this is not the original facade. Look at the corners of the building at the top, looks like there has been alterations done to the front of the original building. Also seems as though both theatres were operated by TMI Thetares at one time though.
Doesn’t the Orpheum look alot smaller? I also found two addresses for a Garby theater in Clarion, PA. Even the phone numbers were different.

I checked a Clarion, Pa geneology and history site and I could only find a Garby Drive-In theater in Clarion operating in 1947. I wonder if the drive-in and the Garby theater were owned by the same person. Okay, change the address of this theater to 627 and another mystery will be solved. :)
The business now located in the former Garby is called Nails II which a Google search shows at 627 Main Street. I believe the address for the Orpheum is 511 Main Street, as already noted by Lost Memory at the link to that theater’s page above.
LM from the looks of the two pictures (Orpheum on the Orpheum Page} and the one you listed above it looks like the same theater.
The Garby and Orpheum Theatres are both listed in operation in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook, no addresses given. I have also found another address for the Garby of 627 Main Street, though it is just as often listed as 511 Main Street.
I just noticed that the Garby Theater in Clarion, PA has the same address as the Orpheum Theater in Clarion, PA. Are these the same theater or is the address wrong for one of them?

Here is a photo postcard of the Garby theater.
This website has some memorabilia of the Garby Theater in Clarion. It starts about midway on the page.
