LM had the info right on his first post to this theatre. It was the Main Street Cinema and was later a multiple screen called the Main Street Cinemas. He also has the correct address listed at 151 E. Main St. The theatre still remains and the only tell tale signs on the front of the building are the poster cases. As I mentioned the State Theatre is a seperate theatre altogether not listed on CT. located AT 105 E. Main St. The building is still standing and part of the bank on the corner of the block.
The State Theatre was located at 105 E. Main St. one building from the corner and is now part of the Bank, you can still see the design on the upper portion of the facade in the red brick. The State is not listed on CT. Seating for the State was listed at 478. The building at 147 if you google it you can clearly see from the sides more than the front that it was also a theatre. When the theatre closed it was called the Main Street Cinemas (Multiple Screens) The building that housed the Main Street Cinemas AKA Main Street Theatre has been given a facelift.
Henderson, Tennessee is a college town. It has remained, population wise, about the same for many years. There are a few fast food restaurants in town like McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Jack’s, Bell’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s and Subway. There is one sit down Mexican Restaurant which is decent and there is one buffet called Arnold’s. They really need a sit down restaurant in the downtown area. The only negative thing about Henderson is that it shuns commercial growth. I have been told by reliable sources that they voted against Wal-Mart from coming there. Obviously, they hoped to save and help the local Piggly-Wiggly and Big Star. It backfired however, because the majority of the residents drive to the Super Wal-Mart in Jackson anyway. Henderson lost out on countless jobs which would have helped the community tremendously. What Henderson needs more than anything is to get some new blood in office. They need a Mayor and elected officials who are pro-active and get much needed industry and other stores in town. Enough of this small town mentality! If a town does not grow, it will eventually begin to die. The Theatre however is better than driving to Jackson, Tn.
Barry Gibb is a resident of Hendersonville, Tennessee, not Henderson Tennessee. Gibb purchased Johnny Cash’s house out on Old Hickory Lake.
Neat oh! Since Barry Gibb is now an official resident of the city, maybe the Bee Gees will do a reunion show there.
The State Theatre is listed in the 1950 F.D.Y. as being located on Main Street, in that year it’s still the only theatre in town(a situation which had existed since at least 1941).
There is a Theatre in Henderson, Tn. I recommend it very highly. It sure beats driving the distance to Jackson! The Theatre is clean and serves the purpose very well for a small town. However, it could provide some entertainment prior to the movie like music and onscreen movie trivia like all of the Theatres in major metropolitan areas provide. But, all in all, it is a nice theatre.
Maybe it is the State. The IMPA still recorded it as being in operation as late as 1988.
Jack, there is only one theatre listed in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook for Henderson, the State, seating 478, with no address given.
I currently do not know. I haven’t had a chance to make a site visit. It is definitely in the vicinity. Is there any mention of it in the FDY?
