The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce refers to this theater as the Bridgeport Stage.

The January 19, 1946, issue of Boxoffice magazine said that architect Raymond F. Smith was preparing plans for a new theater to replace the National Theatre in Bridgeport.

Bridgeport Fine Arts Theater 1007 Halsell

In 1946, the Arcadia Theater (so named because Arcadia means peaceful) was opened. The theater moved from across the street at 1008 Halsell. When television became popular in the fifties, business suffered and the theater closed in 1963. The movie that drew the largest crowd was “Private Buck”. The last movie shown was “Spencer’s Mountain”. In the late 1990’s the Bridgeport Fine Arts Association began a reconstruction of the building. Key members of the association at that time chose the theater’s architecture. The building is now usable and is expected to be fully completed within the next year.
