It’s also the only theater in morris county and northwest jersey to have an atmos sound system which most people can afford to pay for a home theater system and recreate it along with a 4k tv. The next 4k presentation for this theater is Close Encounters 40th anniversary, followed by part one of the It duology the week after. Baby Driver is currently playing in Dolby Cinema. The pilot episodes for Marvel’s Inhumans will be playing in imax this weekend for two weeks before It comes out in imax. My guess is that kingsman 2 will be in dolby and imax with blade runner 2049 next.

Yeah, probably that is true. Can’t think of any others that would be bigger.

which is the largest 4k screen in morris county.

My wild guess is the new Dolby Cinema screen is 58'-60' wide.

I took a quick peek at the new Dolby Screen. Just a quick peek and it was some number of days ago already so I may have a few details wrong. It seems to be pretty much wall to wall across in width so perhaps it is somewhere around the width of the IMAX screen here, maybe just as wide. Pretty sure it is not as tall though.

It didn’t seem to have the extreme floor light bleeding issue brightening up the bottom half of the screen that has apparently plagued some of the earlier Dolby Cinema screens to a bad degree, although it does have the EXIT light issues that apparently quite a few of the Dolby Cinema setups have had. The EXIT on the left side casts a clear red glow onto the far left edge of the screen (at least it is a relatively small spot compared to the total screen area, so it’s hardly the worst, but it would be cool if there was some way to somehow baffle the light the EXIT casts in the screen’s direction).

It does have a few blue ceiling lights left on during presentation. I have never been a fan of ever leaving on ceiling lights, although Manville does this too (with regular white lights). And overall I think they maybe keep the auditorium a bit brighter lit than the IMAX screen and much brighter than the laser IMAX up in Reading, MA (which is the darkest stadium seating auditorium I have been in, which is awesome, miss those days when a black screen in a movie lets the auditorium be able to plunge into near or total darkness and it helps make the blacks more intense and the contrast ratio better). That said, my vague impression was that the auditorium and screen black were kept a bit darker than at the Paramus Dolby Cinema, where it really seemed too bright from my one quick peak in. I could be wrong though. Hard to remember everything exactly.

Projection looked crisp and rich (although I still think nothing compares to what I saw at the laser Reading, MA IMAX). Sound quality seemed excellent but could get way too loud, painful, so that sort of nullifies the top notch speakers. But if you can tolerate ultra loud, the audio setup does seem to be top notch, probably better than the (also way too loud) IMAX here and for sure better than any of the other screens here (although since a few are quieter here I still prefer that). Not sure if it is quite as good as the Reading, MA laser IMAX audio (also way too insanenly loud).

I do wish DOlby would allow their auditoriums to get as dark as IMAX at least and as dark as some laser IMAX would be even better. That said it’s (the auditorium lighting during presentation, not talking about projetor brightness at all) probably as dark as any of the other non-IMAX screens here.

I only saw a few dark scenes in Anabelle when I peeked in so can’t say too much about the projection other than it’s probably gonna be better than other screens here but probably not as good as laser IMAX at Reading, MA. (although it is the only screen here that has EXIT sign glow).

It’s too bad DOlby Cinema never seems to show 3D since Dolby CInema 3D is better than regular digital IMAX 3D is better than Real3D is better than regular digital Dolby 3D. So far the best 3D I have seen is IMAX Laser 3D at Reading, MA, just superbly perfect (sadly the laser IMAX 3D in NYC at Lincoln square had something horribly wrong with many of the glasses and the left eye got terribly doubling, still not sure if they have really fixed that or not).

The next movie to be shown in dolby will be Hitman’s Bodyguard this weekend.

Just got word from Dolby Cinema on FB that any minute this weekend it will open. Maybe in time for Annabelle Creation…

Went to see “Dunkirk” in auditorium #1 and the screen was flat, with the preshow in flat followed by trailers in both flat and scope aspect ratio followed by the movie which was shown in 2.20:1 which was the same format used for 70mm prints. 35mm prints use the 2.39:1 ratio while the digital imax version is 1.9:1. The projection was pretty good and colors popped out nicely. The sound mix was pretty loud and the bass was thumping too. Dialogue was kinda hard to understand although there’s hardly any words spoken in some scenes due to the heavy action in the movie. I bet hearing it in imax would be more painful than seeing it in regular. The movie was entertaining for what it’s worth. Progress on Dolby Cinema is moving along just fine.

Which auditoriums have the best surround sound? I think the Imax one is ok and the larger auditoriums can support up to 7.1 surround sound.

My mistake. On Saturday morning the movie ran 30 minutes late for imax but everything went smoothly. Dolby cinema opens August 1st.

How can an IMAX projector breaks down on Aug 1st if it’s July 22

The auditorium will open late summer according to a chat with Dolby Cinema’s chatbot on messenger.

I don’t see amc rockaway mentioned on their dolby cinema website…

On my facebook news feed as well as twitter I’ve seen ads for Dolby Cinema at AMC Rockaway along with the featured movie which is War for the Planet of the Apes which I plan to see soon…i didn’t care for seeing it in 3d like the last one which was fine in 2d.

moviebuff82
moviebuff82 on July 15, 2017 at 10:22 am

not really. At least the audio mix was good. I wonder which auditoriums have 7.1 speakers…probably the larger ones sans imax. When the dolby cinema at amc opens, it will be the first ever Dolby Atmos location in morris county if not northwest jersey. As for the 3d conversion ,it was terrible. The showtime that my dad picked was 3d by mistake. The trailers before the film were ok in 3d such as Valerian which was shot in 3d. The AMC first look in 3d was good. The 2d trailers looked fine.

thanks

Was it a projection issue with #10 or do you think it was just something a little messed up with some of the 2D to 3D conversion and intrinsic to the video file itself?

And did you notice and color fringing at #10? I haven’t seen a movie on that screen in a number of years but it had horrendous color fringing the last time I did. Just wondering if they fixed that or not.

holy cow why did the last paragraph of my last post turn into gigantic red letters?

alpinedownhiller
alpinedownhiller on July 13, 2017 at 9:59 pm

which screen did you find the 3D blurry at times for Spiderman, #7 or #10? And in what way was it blurry? It’s not blurry in #8 (IMAX).

Just wondering if they ever fixed the problem where the R,G,B alignment for the projection on screens 7 and 10 was out of wack (nothing to do with 3D itself though) which produced color fringing and made things look a touch blurry in a weird way across the entire screen, all the time.

15 and #6 have really good projection (as does the IMAX, although it obviously doesn’t do 4k like it seems 15 and 6 can). I don’t think they ever show 3D in #15 and #6 so it probably doesn’t hurt that the projector is locked into single projection, no polarized mode either. Those two always seem to have deep blacks (for non-Laser, non-Dolby, non-IMAX, at least), strong contrast, bright projection, very crisp, rich colors, nice gamma and calibration and so on.

Just came back from seeing Spiderman Homecoming. Very good movie although the 3d was very blurry in spots. Sound was good. They got more stuff to put in that Dolby Cinema and they have the signs up. I can’t wait…

Once the dolby cinema opens the seating count will be reduced greatly.
