It was never closed. They just delayed scheduling the IMAX shows since they were deciding between abandoning Alice for Turtles or not (they chose the latter). There is no way they’d put laser in here before Lincoln Square. I don’t even think they have their multi-plex laser projector finished yet (apparently they want something cheaper than the big one they put in a full true IMAX places so far).

nothing from AMC per their facebook page. I also checked the Dolby Prime at AMC site for any news…judging from seeing the pictures of the seats on instagram they looks like they’re starting to wear out from their original color.

Any info on what they did…?

Checking showtimes on AMC’s website; looks like the IMAX is closed for the weekend….i wonder if they’re renovating it with laser projectors before Warcraft comes out? It will be a year since the coke freestyle machines and ticketing machines were put in effect. Finding Dory looks like its gonna be packed for the week after.

Looks like X-Men is sold out next week…according to Fandango.

Maybe in the next few years. I know AMC is spending billions according to what they said in a statement. No texting allowed in AMC, which is a good thing.

Do we know what/when renovations are coming to Rockaway?

just saw BvS in regular 2d at theater #9. I like the film grain during the close up shots of Batman and Superman. The movie was loud but not as loud as it would be heard in imax. Ticket prices have gone up quite a bit and will probably increase when the summer comes and soon renovations.

With AMC merging with Carmike at the end of the year, one of the smallest rivals to this theater will be an ally and that is the Sparta theater which is currently owned by Carmike. Maybe they’ll transfer employees from Rockaway to Sparta and vice versa…

I’m not sure why the AMC Prime experience would be better than the IMAX version, considering for BvS around three scenes were shot in 4:3 IMAX full screen

MGrennille, i think Batman v Superman would greatly benefit from AMC Prime in Rockaway if they retrofit their second largest screen from the time advance tickets go on sale February 29th to the release date weekend on Good Friday, March 25. Not only that, but probably laser IMAX for Captain America would be a huge boost.

Alpine, I totally agree with you. I’ve been going to AMC Prime in Paramus for the “official” Prime releases. Seeing The Revenant in Prime was the best movie theater experience I have ever had. It would rock if they would upgrade Rockaway to that next.

Just came back from seeing Hail Caesar in auditorium #14. The picture quality was pretty good and the audio was great. I saw not too far from the back wall and could hear the rumblings from the IMAX theater….they need better soundproofing if they were to renovate this place as the 10th anniversary approaches.

Looks like Gods of Egypt won’t be in IMAX according to advance tickets sales leaving Zootopia as the next IMAX release. Deadpool takes over the IMAX as the sole release this weekend. Maybe Batman V Superman will have a laser release.

Assuming the late announcement for PIP:30th here doesn’t hurt the sales (with people thinking it’s not showing, not having enough time to realize it is, etc.) it might be crowded. This greater Rockaway area seems to really go for the 80s movies. Sometimes if you don’t pre-order you won’t even get in. Not safe to show up last second and expect to be guaranteed to get into those (so just advice for those used to going to the places where these don’t sell quite as well).

I wonder if they fixed the video levels for the Fathom events projector in auditorium 16. Ever since they repaired/replaced it a few months ago, it’s been really crushing the blacks to rather little detail and overall it almost looks like when a 0-255 level signal is shown with levels expansion applied to 0-15 are clipped and 240-255 too almost and it’s not quite filling the screen properly either. It just seems like someone forgot the proper video level toggles or forgot to calibrate it or something. It should be an easy fix, i’d think, if they haven’t already done it.

Actually they are showing PIP:30th after all.

Have you heard any talk of them upgrading to Laser 3D IMAX? It would be awesome if they shut down 8 and 9 and combined them into a true giant screen theater, like a nice 85-90' wide screen, how does such a rich, populated area like NJ have nothing like that (sure Lincoln Square, but often can one go through the $$$, hassle, incredible amount of time of NYC just for a movie).

I have to say Laser IMAX on a truly giant screen is an experience beyond belief. It’s so much better than any other visual experience it’s crazy. Much sharper 3D, so much more detail, the colors seem to have way more shades, the 3D is so perfect it’s like you are there with zero ghosting and you can see so many more layers of subtle depth and then combine that with a giant 90' screen. Wow.

The IMAX at Rockaway is good, better than most screens around the region. But those mega-true IMAX Laser 3D auditoriums blow it away 10000x over.

I think new management ever since Wanda took over AMC a few years ago. The company is in the midst of renovating and upgrading every theater, including this one, with the latest technology. Unlike regular movies, the Fathom events require a live satellite feed, which can be problematic just in case the feed goes down. They also run on 2k projectors which is lower quality and stereo audio than a 4k projector and lossless louder audio. They also never show slides between each showing lately. I’m more excited to see Deadpool this weekend if its any good. I wonder if Star Wars will still run in digital imax if it shares the auditorium with Deadpool. We’ll see on Wednesday. Gods of Egypt will then take over on February 26th before the third Divergent movie arrives. Batman vs Superman will come out in late March after 10 Cloverfield Lane. That movie was partly shot on IMAX.

Does anyone know why in the world they are skipping the Pretty In Pink 30th Anniversary release at this theater when the 80s retro stuff always sells out here and does better business here than pretty much anywhere and then they are showing Maltese Falcon when the older retro stuff never seems to sell out here (not that I’m complaining about the latter)? But what on Earth was AMC thinking with their scheduling and why did they make this retro release ultra-limited theaters and then make other stuff that simply won’t sell as well in many areas ultra wide release? All the other Hughes movies and other 80s stuff like BTTF did crazy good business here. Who runs these places and make the decisions?

I agree with your comment, alpinedownhiller. I’ve seen trailers for movies not coming out in imax shot in flat being shown windowboxed as related to a comment describing the issue while scope trailers span the entire middle of the screen. No masking in the imax screen which is great. Non imax trailers usually get the amc logo and release date along with film logo and rating at the end of each trailer. IMAX trailers usually show the green or red band before the trailer after the crosscheck.

Although the sound is usually way too loud in the IMAX theater the picture is usually very nice and bright and rich and nice and crisp (for non-4k). I like the IMAX 3D better than the Real3D. Even the 3D IMAX here is very nice and bright.

Ever since the projector for fathom events in #16 broke, all those fathom event movies have had somewhat dim projection with very strong contrast and a little over-saturated and almost zero shadow detail. It almost looks like when some double expands 16-235 video levels instead of single expands since that bumps up saturation, kills shadow detail and boosts contrast a bit. I don’t know that the white clipped though.

The Martian in IMAX (when it came to IMAX a second time) was way too loud. The loudest parts either actually bottomed out some of the IMAX speakers or maybe it created some sort of vibration in the entire theater structure since the few loudest parts had some nasty dissonant vibration going on. You could actually hold your ears shut and it was still painfully loud even during some simple dialogue scenes. I don’t know so many theaters crank to 11 these days despite more and more complaints popping up all over.

@thebrat when i went to see Mockingjay Part 2 in Imax the audio was just perfect as opposed to Spectre where it was too loud. Ticket prices went up a few weeks ago but not that much. This place needs a redo soon as some of the seats are worn out.
