The MGM Theatre Photograph and Report form for the Comique Theatre in Lynn has an exterior photo dated 1941. The Comique had a fairly narrow highly ornamented facade at least 2 stories high. There was a small rain canopy over the sidewalk with the theatre’s name above. There are narrow poster cases on each side of the entrance. A cloth banner hangs from the marquee advertising a film with the title of “Here is Ireland” or “There is Ireland”. The Report states that the Comique is on Munroe St., that it is not a MGM customer, that it was built about 1900, is in Poor condition, and has 800 seats.

The Comique was located at 95 Munroe St. in Lynn. It was opened in April 1907 by the movie exhibition pioneer, Moe Mark. In addition to films, there was live entertainment on stage. Between 1940 and 1943 it was known as the New Comique. It closed in 1943 and was demolished in 1946. This info comes from research by CT member Barry Goodkin at the Lynn public library, including writing by Elmo Benedetto circa 1972.

The theater is still standing on 95 Munroe Street, although it is only used as extra storage by the hardware store in the front of the building.

Can someone post a photograph of the standing building at 95 Munroe Street? The two reports of “demolition” and “still standing” are sort of contradictory. :–)
