So that’s what happened to this theater. Well, I’ll be…
Great ad i wonder of all the people to look at that movie ad did they notice “THE CYCLE SAVAGES” rated R with Melody Patterson? hey, wasn’t she that sweet young lady on the TV show “F-TROOP” Melody, i am shocked!
The Desert 5 drive-in was open well before the ‘80s… My friends and I went there during high school – I graduated in 1976. :–)
And yep, the Skyway shrunk in capacity as the years went by. They took out the speakers in the rear of the property – leaving just the poles.
Here is a 1970 ad.
The Skyway is listed as open in 1975 with a 500 car capacity.
I don’t have my camera with me. You’ll have to trust me on this one.
Where is the ad?
Advertised in the LA Times on 7/7/71. Double feature was “Love Story” and “A Few Dollars More”. His and her films, I guess. Phone number was DU2-8505.
This was the Drive In for families. I saw alot of westerns and war movies with my dad. They had a small playground in front of the screen, as I’m sure other drive ins did. My dad would bring his lawn chair and sit outside the car for the movie while we stayed in the car.He would always back the wagon into the stall so we could sit on the tailgate and when we would fall asleep all he had to do was close the tailgate and head home. Not a bad snack bar either. I can still see the people that lived across the way sitting on their cinderblock fences and watching the movies. Alot of memories from 1959 – 1965.
The drive in on lamb and sahara was called the Desert 5. it closed in 1988 and was replaced by the Desert 16 cimemas, itself now closed.
Here is a photo of the Skyway Drive-In dated 1992.
there was a five plex two blocks down the road that was opened in the 80’s called century 5 on lamb and sahara
Yeah for some reason I thought there was another drive-in on boulder hwy. I wish the drive-in was still there instead of another casino. And I hope drive-ins make a come back but with land prices so high I doubt it.
My email is
Sero amusement was the owners from the late 50’s to approx 79.
I worked and lived there for about 4 years.
The sunset drive in theatre was not on boulder hwy. It was across town at cheyenne and rancho area and was a sister theatre to the skyway.
We use to go to this drive-in a lot when I was a kid and as a young adult. One screen, large snack bar, and a not to big play ground for the kids. Of course that’s all I can remember. There was also another drive-in down the street on Boulder Highway called the Sunset drive-in.
I found the following info for this drive-in. It was a single screen theater with an 800 car capacity. It provided in-car heaters and used speakers for sound. It closed in 1981. The address given for this drive-in is: 4035 Boulder Hwy. Las Vegas, NV 89121
