Roxy Theatre

The 409-seat Princess Theatre opened in 1916 and was located on Main Street E. in downtown Milton. It was still named Princess Theatre in 1943, but was later renamed Roxy Theatre.

The Roxy Theatre closed during the 1980’s. The lobby area is used for retail, in 2014 it is a computer sales shop named Crave Systems.

There was another theatre on this site that was built in 1912 and may have burned down in 1915. The building that the Roxy was in still exists (I know because I live in Milton). The Roxy (named the Princess at that time) opened in 1916 and it is true that it lost out in the competition with the new 3 plex that opened in the early 80’s. I can’t find an actual date that it closed, but it only showed movies sporadically by 1982. The entrance way to the theatre is now a store named Awesome Bodies that sells health products (vitamins and such). The building was never demolished.

It is amazing how many theatres are named ROXY in imitation of the once famous name of the New York City panjandrum of the movie palace: Samual Lionel Rothapfel = “Roxy”. His namesake was the famous ROXY THEATRE in NYC, which outlasted him by only 25 years when it was demolished in 1960. The whole story is in that landmark book “The Best Remaining Seats: The Story of the Golden Age of the Movie Palace” by the late Ben M. Hall in 1961. Various editions of it are sometimes available from www.Amazon.com, but only the first edition contains the color plates.
