Under Greenport LI NY in the 1897-98 edition of the Julius Cahn Official Theatrical Guide there is an “Auditorium” listed. Is it this theatre? It was on the first floor and had 700 seats. The pictures posted above show a building which looks old enough to have existed in 1897.

Even though it is now used as a furniture store, the theatre — minus the seats — is still intact. They stage and balcony remain.

The Greenport Auditorium (aka: Goldin Furniture) is NOT the old Greenport Opera House. I know this because my family has owned it since the 1960’s. The Greenport Auditorium was built in 1895 and is at 434 Main Street. The Greenport Opera House was built in the 20’s I believe and was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1938. It was located at 211 E. Front Street, which is where the Greenport Theater is today.
