Opened on October 20th, 1952 by Better Theatres Limited, same own as the Reo in Hamilton. Grand opening ad posted.

The theatre must have remained open until sometime around 1964 because I saw MOONSPINNERS there with Hayley Mills (I was not dating Ms.Mills at the time). I did not see many films here, as I lived in Winona.

The Fox struggled financially even before its final closure. An item in the March 10, 1958 issue of Boxoffice was headed “Fox at Stoney Creek, Ont., Closed Despite Protests” and included this paragraph:

“Rising expenses and declining revenue were given as principal reasons for the closing by Mrs. Audrey Marr, manager. But, Mrs. Marr added that damage done by teenage patrons, including ruined seats, was a factor.”
The item doesn’t specify whether the damage to seats was the result of deliberate vandalism or of an epidemic of incontinence, perhaps brought on by the scary movies of the 1950s, but I suspect the former. Teenagers are less likely to suffer incontinence than their elders, especially when those elders are contemplating the misbehavior of the always horrible young people of each generation.

‘Island of the Blue Dolphins'
'Robinson Crusoe on Mars'
'The Incredible Mr. Limpet’

Just a few of the films I saw at this nabe. I lived around the corner and down the street. (About the same distance from Canada’s first drive-in, the Skyway.) I wish I could remember all the times my brother took me to Saturday matinées after completing his paper route deliveries. Those I’m still able to, warm my heart. (So much so that I wrote The Fox into a screenplay and a novel.)

What a blessed childhood I had in this regard; The Fox (and others) left a truly indelible mark.
