Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened the Queen’s Building at London Airport on 16th December 1955. Just over a year later in 1957 a new facility was opened within the building; the Cinema had seating on one level and was open to the general public as well as airline passengers. It is located between Terminal 1 and the then new Terminal 2.
Owned by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the Cinema was operated by Capital & Provincial News Theatres Ltd of Baker Street, London(later the company became Classic Cinemas). It screened a continuous programme of short subjects, documentaries, cartoons and newsreels. The Cinema closed in 1960 and the space was converted into other uses, mainly offices I believe).
As at late-2007, the Queen’s Building is threatened with demolition as Heathrow Airport continues with its expansion and upgrading when Terminal 2 will also be demolished and replaced.
