This Woodlawn Theatre, the third theatre with this name on E. 63rd Street and adjacent to the first, opened August 15, 1937 in a former bank building. The opening movie was Janet Gaynor in “A Star is Born”. It was closed in 1954.

Wow, how did they manage to convince the CTA to allow their marquee to wrap around the Jackson Park El support beam?

that’s a beautiful color photo (transparency) of the 1951 Woodlawn theatre because it also includes the streetcar there. In 1966 I took the CTA el to the Jackson Park terminal with my buddy Ernie V.

This opened on August 15th, 1937. Its grand opening ad can be found in the photo section.
