I found the following information from an old Covina newspaper:
The future Azusa Theatre was announced in the Covina Argus on July 22, 1927. The structure, to be leased to Principal Theatres, Inc. was to be 60’ by 140’ and have seating for 700. When it opened on December 30, 1927, The Argus put its cost at $200,000. The opening day ad said: “World premiere of a big surprise feature picture.â€
Sound equipment was installed after W.E Knotts, owner of the Covina Theatre, purchased and remodeled it in 1931. It became known as Azusa State Theatre and finally just the State Theatre. There was another theatre in Azusa before the State called the Liberty but it closed three months after the Azusa opened.
From the LA Times, 8/13/72:
The City Council has ordered demolition of the Village Theater, 602 N. Azusa Avenue, within 90 days, rejecting a proposal by the owner to use part of the building as offices. Edwards Theater Circuit, which owns the building, had asked permission to close off the theater and and use the front part of the building for offices. The building has been closed for several months.
Here’s a photo of Edwards Village Theatre in 1963.
In the L.A. Times theatre listings for February 10, 1971, this is the way the theatre is listed: The Village.
