There could have been gap between the time they tore down the theater and the time they built the homes currently on the site. I don’t think so but again, there’s that rapidly fading memory…

I remember a small vacant corner here in the 80’s. Perhaps I am thinking of a different corner? I don’t believe I am though.

This site was never an empty lot except maybe for a short time when the new homes went up (late 90s early 00s). The closest thing to an empty lot was the property to the west of the the theater. This was an open yard behind a 10-12 foot solid grey metal fence. I think it was used for parking trucks. We used to play fast pitch stickball there and sometime had to go over ther fence to retreive a ball. If my rapidly fading memory recalls, we would have to climb over the fence but would come out through a door in the fence, unlocking it from the inside.

Rumor always had it that the building on the corner, always a knitting mill during my lifetime, was at onetime a theater. After the knitting mill closed they started tearing the building down. The siding came off to reveal an old sign clearly identifying the building as a theater. Unfortunately I don’t remember the exact name.

Thanks Lost for finding out about the history of that corner. Like I said, I remember that corner since I was a kid, and always wondered why it was “empty”. I never knew a theater was once there.

Thanks to Bway for doing some property research on the buildings in this area. The status of this theater can be changed to Closed/Demolished.

This photo flips the view around a little, with South on top:

If you click on the map button and switch to satellite view, the arrow points to the small building next to the newer homes (west). I can only find one certificate of occupancy for 490 Woodward Avenue dated 2/13/69. At that time the building was a three story building with the first floor used for textile manufacturing (knitting mill). I also remember the empty lot on the corner where the new homes are located now. Since no build date is given, the small building that Google maps points to could be the former theater building. A photo might help to determine that.

Ooops, wrong corner….the garages are the site of the Germania Air-Drome. The corner to it’s left is the site of the Ridgewood Amusement Palace, where those newer homes are located.
When I was a kid, that was an empty lot. I remember wondering over there a few times. The homes were built there over the last three years or so.

It looks like at some point the Ridgewood Amusement Palace was torn down and replaced with a whole bunch of garages:
